Workshop:
This is a view of the workshop as entered from the
main school entrance (the 'chute' walkway seen in the background). To
the left is a hallway passing the Dean's office and leading to the
general staff offices. The workshop was given this lower, 'chute'
entrance (as compared to the other rooms) to get the engineering
students thinking about the more internal infrastructures of ventilation
chutes, and to provide them with a larger amount of room for
workshopping.
Staff Offices:
The general staff offices (seen in foreground)
connects to the Dean's office (seen in the background) and is given
plenty of space and natural light (slit openings in the background). Along with the workshop, it forms the bottom rooms of the school (based of 'cross' perspective drawings).
Dean's Office:
The
Dean's office has a larger viewing window as well as the characteristic
slits, and a lift which descends directly to the lotus flower folly
below where he can have lunch with his students and appreciate the
majesty of the valley below.
Gallery:
The
gallery forms the most intricate part of the Chinese symbol for school,
the horizontal overhanging top part: å¦. During the design process, I
decided to keep the diagonal 'flicks' but design them from glass, so as
to create intricate, beautiful lighting for the gallery while the
students appreciate others' works from the long, horizontal walls (to
which artworks are placed) and the flat platforms (to which model
buildings are placed).
Student Meeting Space:
From
the right part of the overhanging created by the gallery is a staircase
that leads down to the student meeting space, where the students can
appreciate the full view of the valley where the river leads into the
lake. The environment as seen in the background was based of Jiuzhaigou
Valley in winter when snowy tops could be seen in the distance.
